Roots Run Deep in Garner Valley
"The Hamilton home in Kenworthy continued to be used by members of the family until the mid-1920s. James Hamilton's son Joe and wife, Clara Arnaiz Wellman, raised their four children in this house. Later in the 1920s, Clara's son, Jim Wellman, lived in the house with his young family." (This homestead was located on or near the ranch. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
The Good
At approximately 4,500 feet elevation, you enjoy four gentle seasons—vibrant fall colors, occasional light snow in winter, spectacular springs when everything comes to life, and near-perfect summers with cool, refreshing evenings.
Imagine cozy winter nights by the fireplace, watching the stars after a warm summer day, and waking each morning to fresh mountain air.
Some of Southern California's best destinations are surprisingly close:
- El Paseo in the desert is just 25 minutes away for world-class shopping and dining. and the Apple Store of course!
- Temecula Wine Country is about 30 minutes away.
- Idyllwild is only 15 minutes away for restaurants, excellent schools, shops, hiking, art galleries, and live entertainment.
- The beach is roughly an hour and a half away.
- Palm Springs, Ontario, and San Diego airports are all within about an hour to an hour and a half.
Life here is peaceful, quiet, private, and remarkably safe. There is room to breathe, room to explore, and nature surrounds you in every direction.
The neighbors are friendly, respectful, and value both community and privacy.
High-speed internet means you can work remotely while enjoying a mountain lifestyle.
One of the most remarkable things about this place is what it does to people. Guests arrive carrying the stress of everyday life...and within hours they slow down, relax, laugh more, and reconnect with their inner child.

The Bad
Dogs bark.
Crows caw.
Birds poop.
Squirrels and gophers seem convinced that they own the property.
The wind blows,
So, leaves fall.
Power may occasionally go out.
Wildfire season requires awareness and preparation—as it does throughout much of California. (The lake is a gift and hopefully never needed...)
Friends sometimes have a habit of over extending their visits because they don't want to leave.
Drivers on HWY 74 can be annoying.
Drone package delivery hasn't quite arrived yet...but there's certainly plenty of room for a landing pad when it does!
The hardest part?
Leaving home when nowhere else feels quite like it.

Your dogs will almost certainly decide the pond is irresistible...usually moments before running through the house with muddy paws after you've just cleaned the floors.
The courtyard lawn may look perfect one day, only to become the neighborhood buffet for gophers and rabbits the next.
Mountain winds blow things around.
Dealing with critters who have made themselves a little too comfortable and have brought their entire family tree with them, is never easy as an animal lover.
On the other hand, rescuing an injured bird, fox or helping a stranded baby bunny is one of the unexpected joys of living here—and those moments make the challenges worthwhile.
You definitely learn to find a healthy balance.
